the true cost of your puppy
Have you ever walked into a pet shop and wondered where the puppies came from? Until recently, I never knew they could have come from puppy farms. If you don’t know what a puppy farm is or what it’s like, you’re not alone. Most people hardly know anything about them.
Hundreds of dogs are kept in horrible conditions in puppy farms all over Australia. The dogs are kept there to breed multiple litters to sustain the puppy farm’s cash flow. Once the dog is unable to have any puppies due to over breeding they are taken out of their dirty cages and killed. These dogs do not get any vet checks and are almost always riddled with ear mites, painful gum disease and irritated skin which has texture like paper; not to mention their extremely matted fur and severely malnourished bodies.
Unfortunately, puppy farms are allowed to operate without having to change the way they keep their animals. This is because the government is giving out more and more permits for people to run them. The puppy farms are supposed to be inspected to make sure that it is up to government standards. The inspectors are failing to inspect properly and allow filthy puppy farms with animals in a horrible state to keep running.
Debra Tranter started Oscar’s law after she went to a puppy farm with a friend and saw the state of these dogs. A dog which now is called Oscar was among the many mistreated and neglected dogs. Ms Tranter took Oscar and a few other dogs and straight to a vet for treatment. Ms Tranter then took the puppy farmer to court but she instead was charged with theft. The dogs rescued were returned to the puppy farm. 18 months later Oscar was rescued once again and is now Debra Tranter's loving companion.
Oscar’s Law is a campaign that promotes using rescue organisations and shelters as a first option for adopting pets. It raises awareness in the community about the problems of puppy farms. Its organisers are trying to get the government to stop puppy farms. Oscar’s law will change the way that puppies are kept, bred and sold.
You can watch Oscar’s story below.
The only people who can end puppy farms once and for all are the people of Australia. We must stop the puppy trade by not buying puppies from pet shops but from accredited breeders and organisations such as the RSPCA. We need to take a stand and tell the government that NO animal should be kept like this. The power is in our hands so talk to the paw until we get Oscars law!
